No FMJ Ammo? Really?

Alternate Title: "Vote with your wallet"

So, I mentioned that I went to the range on Friday... Well, it turns out that I didnt get the chance to shoot. Yeah, I went to the range (not the normal range I usually go to). However, when they told me that they changed their policy and that they no longer allow FMJ ammo on their range, I turned around and walked my happy little butt out the door. I then proceeded to go up the road and visit a gun shop that does not have a shooting range to spend the money that I was going to spend that day at the range... bought some ammo and new mags, thank you very much!

I am so sick and tired of gun ranges putting these stupid rules in place to make people buy their over priced ammo for range use. I understand some rules that need to be put in place like no lead ammo or sometimes not even allowing steel cased ammo... BUT... when you are doing crap like not allowing any FMJ ammo of any kind or actually charging a fee to people who want to bring their own ammo you are not endearing yourself to your customers.

You are not fooling anybody by what you are doing. Its pretty darn obvious that when you sell your ammo at a ridiculous premium and then you try to impose silly little rules to either discourage or completely disallow any outside ammo at your facility that you are trying to screw people into paying more for a little range time.

I mean, no FMJ ammo of any kind? Really? You are going to completely ban the most widely used and one of the most economical forms of practice ammo so that you can increases your sales by a few bucks here and there? Not a smart business move. Pissing off customers by ratcheting up practice costs is not how you develop long term customers. Its not how you are going to get people to come back and spend more time at your range, buy accessories, or buy their next firearm purchase from you. Keeping people out of your storefront by making it more expensive to shoot is also going to decrease the number of impulse buys that us gun nuts are so famous for.

I'm sorry, but I am completely and totally over it. I dont know for sure if I will be going back to that particular store/range again, but as of right now I am pretty ticked off about it. I know that they are deliberately trying to manipulate people into using more expensive ammo at the range and I dont like it. Yes, they might make an extra $10 or $15 with someone's individual range trip, but its not a business practice that is going to pay off in the long term. Pissing off a customer for life is not a good way to stay in business... I dont care what business you are in.

  1. I've never heard of a range banning FMJ... That is crazy. What are they thinking? Next they won't let you bring your own guns to shoot...
