Professor packs heat, jailed, faces up to 12 months

Oct. 04--An area college instructor is behind bars in connection with improperly storing a loaded handgun in his motorcycle.
Patrick R. Saunders, 62, of 2782 Laylin Road, was scheduled to appear for a bond hearing today in Norwalk Municipal Court. He was arrested without incident Friday by Huron County Sheriff's Deputy Josh Querin after the traffic stop in front of Berry's Restaurant, 15 W. Main St. Saunders was booked into the Huron County Jail at 9:44 a.m.
Saunders was stopped after he failed to use his turn signal, Lt. Mike Cooksey said.
Querin ran his police dog Bee around the 2005 Harley-Davidson, which indicated on the bike.
"He had some prescription medication that (Bee) had hit on. That was returned to Mr. Saunders," Cooksey said.
When Querin searched the saddle bag, the deputy found a loaded .38 revolver stored there, he said.
"He does not have a CCW (carrying a concealed weapon) permit for it," said Cooksey, who declined to discuss the origins of the handgun.
Saunders was charged with improper transportation of a firearm in a vehicle. If convicted of the fifth-degree felony, he faces six to 12 months behind bars. Cooksey said Saunders doesn't have a previous criminal record.
Not sure of the law in Ohio, but this seems to me to be a bit ridiculous. I guess it is unlawful to transport a loaded gun even though it was in the storage compartment of the vehicle.
