Kel-Tec KSG - a Reader's Experience

Reader, Jersey, recently commented on the Kel-Tec KSG post from a while back about Caleb's video of the KSG choking down during slide manipulation. He had this to say:

I can tell you this much about the gun, dont buy it. I waited months for mine and recently took delivery of it and as any excited boy with a new toy would do,I cleaned it and I went straight to the range. First Impression,it looks cool and that’s where the good impressions end. Kel Tec should have waited till the design was complete and bug free before releasing any of these weapons to anyone.:incazzato:

The gun is very awkward almost to the point of difficult to load and you will most likely cut your finger doing so. Now imagine trying to load this thing in the field under high stress situations. I dont see how it is possible to combat load a round into the chamber without turning the gun upside down. The magazine selector switch is very hard to manipulate from right to left on my gun and would need to be in the neutral position to attempt a combat load, which is one more extra step which would most likely get you shot in the face in real combat..

How do you make the most tacticool shotgun on the planet look even cooler? Do a version in green. Of course the photos are by Oleg Volk who always gets to handle the cool Kel-Tec stuff first. I've got to say, it really looks good in this version:

A Look at the Kel-Tec KSG... It doesnt look good

Daniel over at Guns.com has a review of the KSG. One of the big things he notes (and has been a major question to me with this design) is that recoil is handled very well. He does note, however, that the gun falls a bit short of expectations:

However, when we went out to test it, the level at which it performed as a tactical weapon was laughable – so laughable I'm inclined to think we got a dud and can't do a proper review.

I actually had the opportunity to meet up with Daniel for this shoot, but my scheduling just didnt allow it to be.  Now I am really bummed... I would have loved to have been there to see this new firearm fall flat on its face - which it looks like it certainly did. He has put in a request for another KSG to do a follow up, but this does not look good for Kel-Tec

Yep, Kel-Tec has announced an MSRP of $880 and they will be shipping "by year's end 2011". You can pre-order right now for $665.

Kel-Tec KSG Updates

Via The Weapon Blog... Cheaper Than Dirt reports a few updates on the KSG... I reported the trigger reset fix here

1. Trigger reset. This will be adjusted in the production model so that you can hold the trigger down, pump back and forward, release, and then re-pull the trigger to fire the next round. No worrying about the trigger going dead, and no Pump-firing if you hold the trigger down.
2. Pump lock switch. A new latch button is in the works that will allow the trigger finger to activate the pump lock without reaching in front of the trigger guard, and potentially getting pinched by the pump. Only the KSG in the law enforcement booth had a similar latch button, made out of welded steel, but the production model will be a polymer button pinned to the steel.
3. a removable rail mounted hand-stop will be available (and probably included) to help alleviate fears of sliding your hand too far forward in front of the barrel.
4. indicator holes in the top of the magazine tubes so you can visually see when you have 0, 1, or 2 rounds left in a tube.
The following are accessories that will likely be offered after KSG production ramps up.
1. Extended butt pads. This would be similar to the SU-16 extended pad. Remove some screws and replace the existing pad with the thicker pad.
2. Choke adapter. remove the end muzzle nut, and replace with the choke adapter. this will extend a few inches in front of the existing barrel.
3. breacher attachment. Similar to the choke adapter, just designed for LE use as a door breacher.
4. Single point sling mount.

News on the Kel-Tec KSG Trigger reset problem

I have word from Kel-Tec that the horrific flaw with the KSG trigger that Caleb outlined will be fixed in the production models.

There wont be a shoot-able KSG Shotgun for SHOT Show 2011

The guys at Kel-Tec are saying that they WILL NOT  have a shoot-able version of the KSG at range day for SHOT. They say there will be one that can be fondled and cycled with dumbie shells, but there wont be any trigger time.

They are also saying that at this time it will not be designed to accept choke tubes.

More info on the Kel-Tec KSG Shotgun

Kel-Tec has put out a little more info on the gun now that the secret is out. This is what they had to say:

• • weight: 6.9 pounds unloaded
  • the size is “…as compact as legally possible with a 26.1″ overall length and an 18.5″ cylinder bore barrel”
  • capacity is 14+1 of 2 3/4″, 12-gauge shells
  • two magazines, one on either side of the barrel, each holds seven shells
  • the pump action feeds from either magazine, and the magazine is selected by a manual switch
  • the manual switch is located behind the trigger guard
  • cross-bolt safety
  • Picatinny rails on top and bottom
  • sling loops are built in, and a sling will ship with the shotgun
  • soft rubber recoil pad standard
  • MSRP not fixed, but about $800
