In Response to the Guns.com Article About Derringers

The Case Against the Derringer

Yesterday over at Guns.com, David LaPell posted a great article entitled "From the Remington 95 to the Heizer DoubleTap: The Case for the Derringers". Its a very well written article, and it gives a nice look at the history of the Derringer as well as some compelling reasons why one might choose a Derringer.
Why would you carry one?  One word: summer.

While ideally one would like to have a gun on them at all times and it’s not always the easiest thing to do as the temperature rises and we lose layers of clothing. Ask yourself, how does one go about trying to concealed carry around a Glock on a really hot summer day? Few things can be more uncomfortable than trying to wear a sidearm in an inside the waistband holster when it's hot and sticky out.
Amen to that! My primary carry gun is the Glock 26, but being from the deep south I years ago came to the realization that carrying "a real gun" during the dog days of summer for any extended period of time is no comfortable task. I also had started to realize that there were times when certain clothing dictated that I pretty much had to go unarmed.

Another interesting look at the DoubleTap

Here are some cool pics of the inards... and an optional stripper clip... Which will be very useful indeed (i'd probably carry about 4 of them).

Video: Heizer DoubleTap

It shows how the inards work and also some of the schematics. Whats interesting too is that it looks like the barrels come off and are interchangeable (?) so we may see many more calibers in the future.

More on the Heizer DoubleTap

They have updated their website. There are a few new pics on the home page that show some great detail of the new gun.

Here are the full specs:

Caliber
Weight
Width
Length
Height
Barrel
Frame
MSRP
.45 ACP, 9MM
14 oz Titanium (empty)
.665 inches
5.5 inches
3.9 inches
3.0 inches
Titanium or Aluminum
TBD

Looks like its gonna be kinda hefty weighing in at 14 oz, but shooting .45 ACP thats not really a bad thing. Its also not going to be a deal breaker as far as pocket carry is concerned. I have carried pocket guns that weighed in at around 14oz and I've carried pocket guns that weigh in at 6.5 oz. At a certain point, you start to see diminishing returns as far as weight is concerned. Yes, its always nice to have a super light pocket gun, but at 14 oz, as long as you are carrying in a quality holster, its still gonna be a really nice gun to pocket carry. The biggest things this gun has going for it are the length and width. Those are, IMO, the biggest deal breakers with guns in this weight class. Compare with the specs of the Kel-Tec P3AT (below), and you are looking at a gun that has the potential to be successful if it is reliable and if it is priced right. They will be available in early 2012.

New Firearms Company - Heizer Defense

Now this looks very exciting:

Very similar looking in design to another .45 ACP derringer from the past. This is all they have to say on the website so far:

HEIZER Defense has developed DOUBLETAP™ the world’s smallest and lightest .45 ACP conceal carry pistol on the market today.
Only DOUBLETAP delivers, not once, but twice over! That’s LIFE ASSURANCE!
Titanium Frame with MIL-STD finish resists corrosion.
2 rounds in chamber and integral grips houses an additional 2 spare rounds.
Ported barrel reduces muzzle flip and recoil.
Slim, no-snag and hammerless design for easy pocket carry.
Thumb latch auto ejects spent rounds.
Patent pending double-action trigger.
Even with the porting, I bet it is a hot handful... but I want one!

Here is the press release:
