I was watching 'Big Bang Theory' on CBS last night (hilarious show if you have never seen it), and the plot of the episode really makes me scratch my head. Basically it went like this... The Indian guy on the show was dating a white girl, and his parents didnt approve. They thought that he should date "a nice Indian girl". In fact, they told him that if he did not break up with her then they would cut him off (they were very wealthy).
Soooo.... how is this not racist?
Seriously. I dont really understand how in our hypersensitive, politically correct culture something like this can be acceptable. If the episode had featured a white family telling their son the same things it would have been an outrage and it would be national news. There would have been boycotts by the NAACP, "Reverend" Al Sharpton would be demanding a maya copa, and somebody probably would have lost their job. Same thing if it were a black family telling their son to date "a nice black girl" instead of a white girl. Well, maybe not as much rage, but there would have been something said about it I'm sure.
I actually didnt really think anything about it at the time. I also dont personally have a problem with racially controversial things in the context of comedy. I think people like Chris Rock and Carlos Mencia are hilarious. Their jokes might be distasteful and no were close to politically correct, but they're just jokes. If people cant handle it or are offended, then thats their problem and they need to get over it.
I just think its hypocrisy... but then again... thats the name of the game when it comes to"racism" in this country.
