A bunch of liberals stopped by my blog over the weekend

A bunch of gun owning liberals, that is.... which is fine by me. I am all in favor of everyone of every walk of life being a gun owner.

You might remember an article I wrote a while back in which I talked about the cultural shift that I believe we need to see at local gun shops.... for the sake of the "new gun culture" as well as for people like myself who are just completely over it. It really struck a chord back when I wrote it, and it was very popular over this past weekend as well. I got a lot of comments on that post over the weekend. Several of them mentioning an aspect of gun shops that I never really thought about very much before.... politics.

You see, those liberal folks mentioned that they really hate the political discussions that go on in gun shops and are really turned off by it. I guess it all goes back to the "big three" that you are never supposed to talk about... politics, religion, and a woman's age/weight. I guess they are right. If you are truly going to shift gun shop culture into the mainstream and make traditional gun shops more approachable for everyone, then I guess politics at the gun counter should indeed be off limits.

But here is my thing.... I have never in all my time spent in gun shops heard anything with regards to political discussions that was not centered around gun politics. I know it is anecdotal and completely based on my personal experiences, but I personally just dont see it happening. Now, I am not saying that there is never other political issues discussed in gun shops... I am sure there is even though I have never seen it, but I would bet that most all of those conversations stem from conversations based on gun politics.

I personally don't really think that gun politics should be off limits. It is a gun shop after all, and if the fact that they are bashing liberals for their anti-gun stances bothers you so much, then maybe you as a gun owner should be questioning your loyalty to such liberals. If you are pro-gun, then engage in the pro-gun conversation. Maybe you just dont feel passionately enough about guns as a political issue or maybe you just dont see the gun grabbers for who they really are. However, if you are a gun owner, then you should not be offended by the fact that they are pointing out that the gun grabbers are also liberals.

But in the end, they are right. If gun shops want to be more welcoming to all gun owners then perhaps they should consider adopting the "Just Firearms. Not Politics" motto so as not to turn off anyone.
